Antibes never disappoints and can be very addictive, with its wonderful combination of charming Old Town, lively restaurants and relaxing sandy beaches. It’s a perfect jumping off spot for touring the rest of the Riviera, but a leisurely walk along the Ramparts with magnificent views across the Bay of Nice towards the Alps is worth the trip alone.
If you’re missing the buzz of a big town, you’ll find Nice has plenty to offer but then in contrast as you wind your way along the coast towards Italy you’ll find a series of memorable towns to visit, ranging from Villefranche, Eze, Beaulieu and Menton to of course the unmissable Monte Carlo.
In the other direction you’ll find similar contrasts. On the one hand, there is of course glamorous Cannes with its huge array of shopping opportunities, but also worth investigating are the Îles de Lérins and the walks along the coast by the Esterel at Mandelieu and Théoule.
If you want to escape the crowds and experience the rural pace of life there are plenty of hilltop villages to explore, ranging from Vence which is only 30 minutes away, nestled under Le Baou, to Fayence in the ‘Lake District’ and the Gorge du Verdon (the Grand Canyon of Provence)
